Book Club #1: The Year of Yes

It’s been my goal since launching Arden’s Book Club to actually host you all in book discussions. As much as I love providing new ideas for your book shelf, I truly believe reading has the ability to enhance our lives.

Diving into stories allows our imaginations to run wild. Soaking up wise words allows us to become better people. Doing both of these in a community helps us to be happier citizens.

So, six-ish months after launching Arden’s Book Club, I invite you to our first group read: The Year of Yes by Shonda Rimes.

shonda-rhimes-a-435THE YEAR OF YES FROM AMAZON’S REVIEW

Before her Year of Yes, Shonda Rhimes was an expert at declining invitations others would leap to accept. With three children at home and three hit television shows on TV, it was easy to say that she was simply too busy. But in truth, she was also afraid. Afraid of cocktail party faux pas like chucking a chicken bone across a room; petrified of live television appearances where Shonda Rhimes could trip and fall and bleed out right there in front of a live studio audience; terrified of the difficult conversations that came so easily to her characters on-screen. In the before, Shonda’s introvert life revolved around burying herself in work, snuggling her children, and comforting herself with food.

And then, on Thanksgiving 2013, Shonda’s sister muttered something that was both a wake up and a call to arms: You never say yes to anything.

I chose this book because I get the fear that comes from saying “yes.”

I want to meet new friends but I won’t say yes to a singles event at my church because I’m afraid to go alone.

I want to write a book but won’t say yes to writing it because I’m afraid of what I’ll discover in my words.

I want your help to make my dreams a reality but I won’t say yes to sharing them with you because I’m afraid of what you will think.

Maybe you need to say “yes” to being more proactive with your health, your finances, your family… Whatever it is, if you’ve read this far you should buy the book and join Arden’s Book Club in The Year of Yes.

  3. I read this book last month and loved it. My book club is reading now and I will have to host it in February. I can’t find the discussion questions that would go along with the book. HELP

    1. Hi, Christine! As far as I know, there are no discussion questions for the book. Maybe you could take the chapter titles and discuss those? I had a hard time figuring out the best way to lead it online too… I’m sure you all will have good points to discuss though. Please tell me how it goes!
